John Dalton, father of nanotech?

BBC News reports that the 200th anniversary of John Dalton’s address describing his atomic theory is just around the corner.

The important discovery was made when Dalton investigated, with a chemist friend, how gases could be absorbed by liquid in order to aid production of medicinal soda water.

“Ultimately, it was all down to fizzy drinks,” [Rajkumari Williamson] Jones [a science historian at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology] said.

It’s striking that he’s described in this article as the “father of nanotechnology” (more like the great-great-great-grandfather of it)– a title that at once honors and dramatically misrepresents his ideas.
