One of the principal reasons I moved up to OS X was to be able to access iTunes, and to find various ancient songs that I hadn’t heard in the last 20 years. I’ve had pretty good success tracking down some pretty obscure things– though Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light” is nowhere to be found– but I’ve had a real surprise in the course of rediscovering this music.

When I was young, I always had pretty lousy stereo equipment– often just a portable AM/FM radio, or a $39 stereo from K-Mart– and it turns out that, even though I heard some of these songs a thousand times, there was a lot of detail I missed. Now I hear it. Twenty years later.

[To the tune of Bryan Ferry, “The Right Stuff,” from the album Bete Noire.]
