I’m squirreled away today, finishing a draft of an article on the future of, among other things, personal fabrication. More when I resurface from my little bubble of caffeine, loud music, ubiquitous Post-Its, and multiple Word documents.

I've been reading up on rapid prototyping technologies, and came across an interesting argument: that the use of 3-D printers, which allow students to make quick physical copies of things they've designed on computers, is making engineering cool, and helping kids develop spatial skills.
Timothy Jump, a teacher at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School, a private college preparatory school in St. Louis, Missouri… [says], "Until 3D printing came along, we were unable to show young people the beauty of the engineering process, taking an initial idea all the way to completion, until late in their educational experience…. 3D printing stimulates a student's mechanical-spatial awareness in ways that textbooks cannot."
Don Jalbert, a CAD/CAM mechanical design instructor at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center in Lewiston, Maine, says 3D printers can help young people realize they have a knack for engineering. "When I taught CAD 10 years ago, the concepts were wholly theoretical because the students could not touch or feel the objects they created. Now with the 3D printer, students can do much more than draw a part. They can evaluate it, refine it, assess how it fits in a larger assembly, and hand it to people. The 3D printer is a great recruiting tool for getting students excited about engineering."
When you think about it, massive multiplayer games are essentially fun-ride versions of CAD and CAAD systems: part of the appeal of Second Life is that you can build all kinds of interesting virtual stuff, from bodies to buildings. It may be that, in the long run, the phenomenon of video games eroding kids' mechanical or spatial skills will be replaced with a pattern in which they translate the design and engineering skills they learn in virtual worlds into the physical world, through the mediation of 3D printing technology. Just a thought.

Back from Santa Cruz. The talk went reasonably well, though of course I've since thought of a couple slides that would make it a lot smoother, and make the argument more powerful. It's always that way.
The crowd was good, though it's always fun doing a talk like this in a library. You can tell who the library professionals are when we reach the slide that says that libraries are going to survive, and it's cyberspace that's going to go away.
Time now to dive into Adam Greenfield's Everyware.

From AttentionTrust.org, I got to Outfoxed:
The essential idea of Outfoxed is that people make decisions based primarily on a few people whom they trust. The average person has a set of experts whom they consult in designated areas: the computer expert, the car expert, the fashion expert, the financial expert. If the opinions of these experts can be collected, they are incredibly useful: it is this metadata (data about other data) that gives the most intelligent filtering and sorting of the information on the internet.
Another example, I think, of the kind of system Marty Tenenbaum talked about at PARC a couple months ago- one that combines the power of AI, expert systems, and algorithms running on fast machines, with the experiences and intuition of people.

This afternoon, via Media Influencer, I came across AttentionTrust.org. The premise:

Got to have lunch and spend the afternoon with Ulla-Maaria Mutanen (author of the widely-read “Draft Craft Manifesto“) and Jyri Engeström. They’re visiting the States for a bit, and were in the Bay Area for the Maker Faire.
I’ve followed Jyri’s work off and on for a while, and recently discovered Ulla’s Thinglink project (after finding her through a Technorati search of other people who’ve written about Bruce Sterling’s new book, Shaping Things— a book I’ve found very stimulating, and have lots of notes on over at End of Cyberspace). Thinglink is one of those things that looks really simple, and is; but it’s deep, and holds tremendous possibility.

I’m spending much of today in Santa Cruz, which should be pleasant. I’m doing a talk on the end of cyberspace at UCSC, but am going down there a few hours early to sit in one of the college cafes, work on the talk, and generally soak up the ambience. (I just hope I’m not too allergic to patchouli oil.)
I’ve always liked UCSC: to my mind, it’s one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, though also one of the most unusual. It’s also got a phenomenal archive on the history of 20th century astronomy.
